Keep Your Hanging Baskets Beautiful All Summer Long

There’s nothing quite like a vibrant hanging basket overflowing with colourful blooms. They add instant beauty to front porches, patios, decks, and garden spaces. At Holden Lake Farm & Garden, our hanging baskets are BC grown with care, and with just a little attention, they’ll continue to brighten your home well into the summer.

The secret? Consistent watering.

Water Before the Heat of the Day

Morning is the best time to water your hanging baskets. Watering early allows the moisture to soak into the soil before the afternoon sun arrives. Plants have time to absorb what they need, helping them stay healthy during warm summer days.

If you’ve missed the morning, evening is your next best option. Avoid watering during the hottest part of the day, as much of the water can evaporate before it reaches the roots.

Water Deeply, Not Just the Surface

A quick splash isn’t enough for a thriving hanging basket. Water slowly until you see it draining from the bottom of the container. This ensures the entire root ball receives moisture and encourages stronger, healthier roots.

If your basket has become very dry, water may run straight through without soaking in. In that case, water slowly, wait a few minutes, and water again. Severely dry baskets can even be soaked in a tub or bucket of water for 15 to 30 minutes to fully rehydrate the soil.

Check Before You Water

Every basket is different. Sunny locations, windy weather, and larger plants all use water at different rates.

Rather than watering on a strict schedule, check the soil each day. If the top inch feels dry, it’s time to water. During heat waves, your baskets may need watering twice a day to stay looking their best.

Feed for Continuous Blooms

Flowering plants work hard all season, and regular feeding helps them keep producing new blooms.

A balanced water-soluble fertilizer every one to two weeks can encourage lush growth and vibrant colour. Follow the label directions, as too much fertilizer can be just as harmful as too little.

Remove Spent Flowers

Deadheading, or removing faded blooms, encourages many annual flowers to produce even more blossoms. It also keeps your baskets looking tidy and healthy throughout the season.

A few minutes each week can make a noticeable difference.

Watch for Signs of Stress

Wilting doesn’t always mean your basket needs water. If the soil is already damp, the plant may simply be reacting to the afternoon heat and could recover once temperatures cool.

Yellow leaves, fewer flowers, or stunted growth can also indicate it’s time to adjust your watering or feeding routine.
